Abstract

1,163,501. Reinforced foamed plastics laminate. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 2 May, 1967, No. 20269/67. Heading B5N. A foamed plastics product is reinforced with an open mesh screen 14 made of filamentary material, the screen having reinforcing elements which are thicker than the filamentary material secured to the junctions thereof. In one method of making the product a reinforcing screen 14 is placed in a mould 10, which may be lined with a release agent, spacing blocks 16 are placed on the screen, and a second screen 15 identical with the screen 14 is placed on the blocks. Before or after laying of the screen 15 a foamable liquid 17 is poured into the mould which is then closed. Foaming then occurs during which the mould may be cooled or otherwise treated, e.g. to cause the foamed plastics to be denser near the surfaces. The screens 14, 15 may be of woven metal wires 18 or glass filaments impregnated with a thermosetting resin, and the reinforcing elements may be blocks 19 of solid, or cellular material such as concrete, plastics or baked porous clay, projecting preferably on both sides of the screen. The foamed plastics material 17 may be polystyrene, P.V.C., urea- or phenol-formaldehyde or polyurethane, and may be elastic or rigid. The spacing elements 16 may be of the same material as the foamed plastics, or of wood. The edges of the screen 14 may be bent upward or downward, or the screen may be corrugated. In an alternative method the product is formed continuously between two spaced moving moulding surfaces. The product may be used in constructional panels.
