<PICT:0841647/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0841647/IV(a)/2> <PICT:0841647/IV(a)/3> A cavitied slab or block of blown sponge rubber, suitable for use as a cushion, is made by laying on the bottom of a mould 1 a sheet 8 of a rubber mix compounded for producing a blown sponge, laying a further sheet 9 of the mix on an openwork platform of rods or wires 4 fitted within the open top of the mould, and heat curing the two sheets so that they soften and swell with the upper sheet 9 sagging through the spaces of the openwork platform and cohering with the sheet 8 to form an integral block with cavities in the upper surface. The rods or wires 4 may either be removed or allowed to remain in the block as reinforcement. With an openwork of two crossing sets of parallel wires a cavitied block is produced as illustrated in Fig. 5, and if the rods extend in one direction only a block as illustrated in Fig. 6 is produced.
