Abstract

1,162,711. Ferric chromic phosphate. CHAS. PFIZER & CO. Inc. 7 July, 1966 [13 July, 1965], No. 30509/66 Heading C1A. [Also in Divisions C3 and C4] The pigment and active agent of an anticorrosive coating composition is a ferric chromic phosphate obtained either by oxidizing a soluble ferrous salt in an acid medium and in the presence of phosphate ions with at least a stoichiometric amount of a soluble chromate salt, or by precipitation from a ferric salt solution by the addition of a soluble chromic salt and acid and phosphate ions. The first method yields a ferric phosphate chromic phosphate molar ratio of 3: 1, and in the second molar ratios of 5-1: 1 may be obtained. Numerous water-soluble ferrous, ferric, chromate and phosphate salts are listed. The acid is preferably phosphoric acid, thereby contributing the required phosphate ions, but HCl and H 2 SO 4 can also be used. The reaction is carried out from room temperature to 100‹ C., and precipitation is completed by the addition of a base, particularly NaOH. The precipitated pigment is conventionally filtered, washed and dried.
