Methyl cellulose is made by treating alkali cellulose at 80-100‹ C. and 0.1-6 atmospheres (gauge) with gaseous methyl chloride at a relative humidity of 20-50%. The process may be run continuously, with the starting methyl chloride passed through a humidifier, and after passing through the alkali cellulose, being purified of cellulosic dust, water and byproduct methanol before being recycled. A diagrammatic flow chart is given.
