A selective printer having a plurality of printing hammers D, Figs. 1 and 4, spaced at letter-spacing intervals is provided with a continuously moving type carrier T or K having one or more sets of alpha-numerical characters disposed such that a gap or-gaps is or are formed between a succession of characters to render the printed characters visible as they are being printed. Type-wheel machines; type-wheel construction; power assisted type selection.-In one embodiment the type carrier T, Fig. 1, which is driven for continuous rotation past the hammers D, is formed by a semicircular cylinder having a number of peripherally arranged sets of alphanumerical characters, the gap being provided between the extreme characters, such that the printed characters may be viewed along a line B. A complementary transparent semicircular cylinder (not shown) may be bonded to the type carrier T. In another embodiment the type carrier T may be replaced by a semicircular disc (R, Fig. 5) which is mounted for continuous rotation about an axis normal to the printing line.. Type-band machines; power assisted type actions; printing surfaces.-In a further embodiment the type carrier K, Fig. 4, is formed by an endless belt constituted by a pair of spaced bands on which the types are mounted equidistantly to provide gaps of letter-spacing width through which the printed characters may be viewed as the endless belt is continuously driven by a motor M past the printing medium P. In a final embodiment the type carrier K (Fig. 3) may be constituted by an endless band in which the gaps are formed by removing portions in the band. The gaps may be filled with transparent material or the endless band may be formed of transparent material and the types spaced equidistantly at appropriate distances.
