Abstract
1,161,601. Conveyers. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. 9 Sept., 1966 [13 Sept., 1965], No. 38936/65. Heading B8A. To reduce the risk of damage to the plain ends of cigarettes due to a tendency for the tipped ends of the cigarettes to move ahead of the plain ends when a stream of cigarettes is conveyed, in a direction transverse to the axes of the cigarettes, by a conveyer system comprising opposed conveyer surfaces, means are provided to skew the cigarettes so that their plain ends are in advance of their tipped ends at the commencement of their travel between the opposed conveyer surfaces. As shown, cigarattes C are transferred from a pair of endless chains 51 on to endless band conveyers 54-56 of which band 54 is driven a little faster than band 55, and the latter is driven faster than band 56. As a result the plain ends P of the cigarettes gradually move ahead of their tipped ends T before the cigarettes pass between opposed conveyer surfaces comprising a drum 68 and an endless band 72, Fig. 1. Above the bands 54-56 but spaced therefrom there is a band 83 which is driven at the same speed as the chains 51. The band 83, which engages spaced discs 75, 76 mounted for swing- ing movement on arms 78, 80, is thus able to rise and fall according to the depth of cigarettes at any moment.
