A loading platform ramp 15 is pivotally mounted at 17 on a framework 10, 11 and is raised and lowered on to a vehicle when it engages the buffer 30 of a rod 26 supported for longitudinal movement on rollers 27. As the rod 26 moves rearwards a roller 46 of an actuating arm 45 runs up a trackway 40 to raise the platform until an upright 39 is passed when the platform can fall until the lip engages the vehicle platform or until the roller 46 falls on to a ramp 42. When the loaded vehicle is withdrawn the rod 26 is restored by a spring 31 the roller 46 running up the ramp 42 and under the tracking 40 until it comes to rest in a recess 43<SP>1</SP> of a horizontal part 43. In this position the platform is supported horizontally by legs 53 engaging blocks 54 on the rod 26 which blocks are cleared as the rod moves rearwards to allow the platform to drop below the horizontal on to a vehicle. If the rod 26 is moved rearwards while the platform is held against rising the arm 45 pivots away from a stop 48 against the action of a spring 49 to prevent damage of the mechanism.
