Abstract

1,160,438. Toy vehicle controlled by light beams. P. BURTON. 7 Sept., 1967 [16 Sept., 1966], No. 41472/66. Heading A6S. [Also in Division G1] The speed or direction of motion of a model vehicle is controlled by directing a light beam at one or more of three photoelectric elements mounted upon the model, two of the elements having a field of view in one and the same direction relative to the third which has a field of view in a different direction. In Figure 3, which shows a circuit for controlling the direction of motion of a model, photoresistors 18, 19, 20 when illuminated operate relays 24, 25, 26, respectively. Relays 24 and 25 are self latching and when both are operated reverse the d.c. supply to the driving motor to reverse the motion of the model. Relay 26 when operated breaks the holding circuits of relays 24 and 25. The photoresistors are each contained at the closed end of a cylindrical or conical light shield with the opening of the shield of photoresistor 18 pointing in a different direction to the direction of the other two. A general sweep of the beam across the model only therefore illuminates photoresistors 19 and 20. A sweep from right to left stops the car by latching up relay 25; a sweep back again unlatching it to drive the model forward or if photoresistor 18 is illuminated to latch up relav 24 to reverse the model. Phototransistors may be used instead of photoresistors.
