Abstract

[Also in Division F3] The components 2 of a combustible cartridge case are made from an aqueous suspension of entirely combustible fibres preferably containing a major proportion of nitrocellulose fibres with an apparatus comprising a die 20 and a mould 33; a perforated separating ring 36; heating chambers 30, 38; and an annular vacuum chamber 26 communicating with annular grooves 23 and 35 in base plates 22 and 34 respectively. The external surface of the die 20 is provided with radial grooves (41, Fig. 11, not shown) and a bronzed cloth or screen (42) to encourage surplus water to flow away. To make the components the fibres are formed into a blank; the resulting blank is dried and compressed at a temperature of not more than 122‹ C. whilst subjecting it to a vaccum to extract water; and the dried blank is impregnated with resin which is subsequently cured before compressing the blank to its final shape and dimensions at a temperature of not more than 122‹ C. whilst subjecting the blank to a vacuum.
