[Also in Division F2] A prosthetic heart valve comprises a substantially circular ring 1, 2 providing an annular valve seat 1a and having on its periphery a member 5 suitable to receive suture threads, there being two substantially semicircular flaps 3 pivoted by pivot pins (3a) to the ring so as to be movable between positions in which the valve is open or closed, the two flaps being spaced apart from one another when in the open position so as to leave a passage between them of width 0.5 to 5 mm. The passage between the open flaps is said to prevent the two flaps remaining held together in the open position by a capillary effect. As shown, the valve seat and flaps are of a stainless metal or an alloy material and the member 5 comprises a braid of an exemplified synthetic material held to the ring 1, 2 by a spring or screw-threaded ring 6. An arch member 4 provides an abutment which engages the valve flaps when they are open so that their dihedral angle is 5‹-45‹ (e.g. 25‹). The dimensions of the valve are exemplified and the valve flaps may taper in thickness away from the pivot pins. Recesses (3b) are formed in the corners of the flaps (Figure 1, not shown) or, alternatively, in the valve seat. Instead of the abutment provided on the arch 4, stops may be provided on the flaps.
