Abstract

[Also in Division G1] Rollers 14, driven by a motor M and drawing strip material off a coil 21, are automatically decelerated at a constant rate f when a relay 43 is operated by a circuit including a tachogenerator 17 measuring linear strip speed V, and a rotary potentiometer 27 mechanically coupled to an arm 21 measuring the radius r of the coil 12. The thickness h of the strip may be measured or calculated from radius and speed measurements, and it is shown that if the roller 13 carrying the coil 12 has a radius r 0 , then for the strip velocity V to be zero as the end leaves the roller 13 it is required that The r<SP>2</SP> signal is obtained from a squarer 30, and supplied to a summing amplifier 32 together with a signal obtained from a decade switching circuit 37, which receives a fixed deceleration signal f, a thickness signal h, and a V<SP>2</SP> signal from a second squarer 33 driven by the tachogenerator. The output of amplifier 32, representing is compared at 40 with a set r<SP>2</SP> 0 signal, and a zero output from the comparate 40 operates the relay 43 to initiate deceleration.
