Abstract

1,159,392. Apparatus for electrolytic treatment of rotating articles. W.J. CAMPBELL. March 31, 1967 [April 5, 1966], No.15036/66. Heading C7B. In a method of electrolytically producing a protective coating upon an article e.g. by anodizing or electro-plating, the periphery of the article is continuously rotated such that a portion only thereof is immersed in the electrolyte at any one time and the electrolyte is caused to flow in contact with the immersed portion at right angles to the direction of rotation thereof. In the form shown a cylindrical article 1 is rotated about shafts 2 positioned at each end thereof such that part of the periphery of the cylinder is immersed in electrolyte 5 contained in the tank 4. Beneath and about the cylinder 1 is positioned an arcuate sheet 9 e.g. of copper, stainless steel or other metal or of a plastics material having metal strips attached thereto, which sheet serves as a baffle and forms the counter-electrode. Electrolyte 5 is supplied via inlet 15 to the arcuate passage between the cylinder 1 and sheet 9 to flow through the passage and thereafter to flow between the underside of the baffle 9 and the floor of the tank 4 to pass over baffle 16 to outlet 17 - see arrows 5. Copper baffles used may be rigid or flexible and if the latter, the curvature of the copper sheet may be adjusted according to the diameter of the cylindrical article to be coated. One end of the base of the baffle may be raised with respect to the other end to accommodate conical shaped workpieces. Further electrolyte may be supplied to the cell, e.g. by means of a sparge tube 18 positioned above the workpiece, having a plurality of jets increasing in size from the inlet end of the tank to supply a greater cooling effect furthest therefrom. The process may be used for anodizing large cylindrical aluminium articles such as torpedoes.
