Abstract

1,159,388. Automatic voltage control. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. Nov. 25, 1966 [Dec. 13, 1965], No.52778/65. Heading G3R. A voltage regulator for a generator 11 supplying a load 14 over output lines 12, 13 comprises a voltage divider 15, 16 associated with a Zener diode 17 for sensing output voltage variations; an error amplifier 18 which correctively controls the generator 11 in response to a first input from the voltage sensing circuit the amplifier including a first transistor in series with the generator field winding and a second transistor, to the base of which the said first input is applied, controlling the first transistor; and a further voltage divider 19, 20 which is connected across the output lines 12, 13 and which provides, over resistor 21, a second separate input to the base of the second transistor, the resistor 20 being temperature-responsive and mounted in proximity to a component in the system which must be protected from excessive temperature. The arrangement is such that the output of the generator is reduced if a predetermined temperature is exceeded. It is stated that this system with its separate temperature-dependent input to the amplifier has advantages over those regulators in which the temperature sensitive device acts either through the voltage sensing circuit or directly on the output stage of the amplifier. A detailed circuit arrangement for a three phase alternator with a rectified output is described with reference to Fig. 2 (not shown).
