Abstract

1,159,128. Blowing lances. KENNECOTT COPPER CORP. 11 Oct., 1966 [14 Oct., 1965], No. 45458/66. Heading F4B. An oxygen lance for a reverberatory copper smelting furnace comprises a liquidcooled shank 14 made in two parts 14a, 14b joined by a swivel joint 15, a pendulous mounting collar 16, and a directional injection tip 17. Discharge passages (27, Fig. 6) are formed in the side of the tip 17 and the direction of discharge can be manually adjusted by using a wrench to turn the lower part 14a of the shank 14. The pendulous mounting prevents damage by floating unmelted material and comprises an upwardly flared collar 16 resting in a hole in a slide plate 40 which rests on a water-cooled entry block 38 covering a hole 13 in the furnace roof 10a. The lance is cooled by oil flowing in passages (18, 19, Figs. 3-6) externally concentric with the oxygen flow passage (26) in the shank 14. The injection tip 17 is formed of copper alloy and is brazed to a steel ring (31, Fig. 6) which is welded to the steel shank 14. The oil flow passages in the tip are protectively plated. Longitudinal beads 37 are formed on the tip to anchor frozen melt thereto.
