Description

R. PUGNET Filed Aug. 8, 1935 DEVICE FOR EXTINGUISHING FIRES ON BOARD SHIPS Sept. 29., 1936.
Patented Sept. 29, 1936 DEVICE FOR EXTINGUISHING FIRES ON BOARD SHIPS Rene Pugnet, St.-Nazaire, France, assignor of one-half to Societe Anonyme des Chantiers et Ateliers de Saint-Nazaire (Penhoet), Paris, France, a corporation of France Application August 8, 1935, Serial No. 35,366 In France March 13, 1935 1 Claim. (Cl. 299-73) The invention relates to a'fire extinguishing the annexed drawing, by way of example, in device for the extinction of fires starting in cabwhich: ins on board vessels, the operation taking place Figure l is a vertical section showing the endirectly above the fire and from a position protire device; tected from any smoke. This is accomplished by Figure 2 is a detail showing the plug in posimeans of a fire extinguishing hydrant pipe passtion;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the spring flap.
Vertically above the centre of each cabin and in the planking of the upper deck I forming the ceiling, there is provided an orifice with two diameters 2, 3 in which there will be permanently fitted a part 4 of corresponding diameters and having a central orifice 6 forming a spherical cup 1, and a threaded part 8 in which there may be screwed a closing plug 9 covering the central orifice 6. The closing plug 9 is provided with one or more blind holes ill (one being shown in the example) in which engage the male element or elements of a spanner wrench designed for the purpose.
The ceiling proper ll, of the cabin is provided with a circular orifice l2 of definite diameter located opposite the orifice 2, 3 and closed by a plug l3 adapted to form an ornamentation. This plug i3 is held lightly by points 14 so as to be easily disengaged and dropped into the cabin.
The closing plug 9 being removed, the mouthpiece or nozzle carrying pipe I6 of a hydrant or supply pipe 17, which comprises a swivel joint I8 adapted to be supported on the spherical cup 1 can be fitted in the central orifice B of the part 4.
The mouthpiece or nozzle pipe terminates in a nozzle i9 bent at right-angles and said nozzle, after having disengaged the plug 13 of the ceiling proper, passes through the orifice l2 and comes under the ceiling of the cabin.
Between the mouthpiece pipe E6 of the nozzle l9 and the supply pipe l'l, there is interposed a swivel joint constituted by a male part 29 terminated by a hollow spherical part 2| fixed directly on the coupling member 22 of the supply pipe I1, and a female part 23 provided with handles 24.
The female part 23 is made integral with the mouthpiece pipe [5.
The male and female parts are held one against the other by a threaded nut 25 forming a cap for the stuffing box of the joint.
To the undersurface of the part 4, in which is made the orifice 6 forming at the same time the spherical cup I for the swivel joint I 8, there is hinged at 26 a flap 2'! subject to the action of a spring 28 tending to force it into its closing position. Packing 29 on said undersurface of the ing through an orifice previously made in the ceiling.
In accordance with this idea, there is provided above the centre of each cabin, in the planking of the ships deck above the cabin, an orifice through which may be passed a pipe having a nozzle at its lower end. A seating for a blank washer is provided in the wall surrounding said orifice, and this washer is adapted to be manipulated by means of a spanner wrench adapted to engage one or more blind holes provided in said washer. Opposite this orifice, and in the ceiling proper, there is cut a circular orifice of definite diameter covered by a plug forming an ornament for the ceiling of the cabin and held lightly in position by points, so as to be easily detached.
The annular wall surrounding the orifice in the ships deck provides a spherical cup on which will rest, after the removal of the blocking plug, the special parti-spherical or swivel joint portion of a nozzle pipe of a fire extinguishing hydrant or supply pipe, said nozzle pipe terminating in a bent nozzle. The provision of this swivel joint makes it possible to direct the nozzle to all points necessary for the projection of the extinguishing liquid into all the corners of the cabin.
Between the hydrant or supply pipe and the extension carrying the nozzle, there is interposed a swivel joint constituted by a male part fixed on the hydrant pipe and suitably supported on a female part integral with the extension or nozzle pipe by means of a nut provided with two handles, so as to permit the nozzle to be turned in any direction whilst leaving the hydrant or supply pipe stationary. There is also hinged, be low the orifice forming the seat for the swivel joint of the extension or nozzle pipe, a spring drawback flap automatically blocking the said orifice as soon as the nozzle is drawn out and thus facilitating the replacement of the blocking plug without having to fear the outlet of smoke.
The plug in the circular orifice of the ceiling proper is adapted to be removed by the insertion of the end of the nozzle through said orifice.
To clearly explain the invention it will be more particularly described with reference to part 4 ensures a tight joint, between the flap or door 21 and the part 4.
When the mouthpiece pipe I6 is drawn out of the opening 6 the spring 28 automatically causes the closing of the flap 21 which thus performs the part of a shutter.
In consequence of the swivel joint mounting of the mouthpiece pipe it of the nozzle it is possible to direct the nozzle to all points necessary for extinguishing the fire within the cabin whilst having a sufliciently tight joint to prevent passing of smoke from the cabin to the upper deck I.
The form of the bent nozzle 59 at the end. of the pipe I6 facilitates the directing of the jet under the ceiling.
Furthermore, the swivel joint interposed between the nozzle pipe 18 and the supply pipe ll permits of rotating the nozzle l 'while leaving the supply pipe stationary.
Finally, the arrangement of the flap 2? under the orifice 6 of the part 4, automatically isolates the room or cabin as soon as the delivery of water isterminated and consequently when the nozzle pipe [6 is removed from the orifice 6, the flap 2'! automatically moves to closed position, thereby preventing smoke and steam from being distributed over other portions of the ship.
The flap 21 in automatically covering the aperture 6, facilitates the putting into place of the plug 9 and permits of postponing this without inconvenience if more urgent work is to be carried out.
I claim:
A device for extinguishing a fire within a compartment having a wall, comprising a port in the wall forming a parti-spherical seat, a pipe adapted to extend through said port and having a nozzle at its outlet end arranged at an angle to the main portion of the pipe, a spherical member mounted on the pipe and movable with the latter for snugly engaging the seat when the pipe is inserted through the port, said member being free at all times to be moved away from the seat by the operator when the pipe is Withdrawn from the port, a handle on the pipe and arranged to be used by the operator in manipulating the nozzle, said spherical member being positioned between the nozzle and the handle, a supply hose connected to the pipe for furnishing a fire extinguishing fluid to the pipe, a door arranged within the compartment, and means for automatically closing the door when the pipe is withdrawn from the port.
