Abstract
1,158,365. Manufacture of pyridine and 3- methylpyridine. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 26 April, 1968 [9 Nov., 1967 ; 29 Jan., 1968], Nos. 51107/67 and 4498/68. Heading C2C. Pyridine and 3-methylpyridine are obtained by interacting acrolein with NH 3 in the vapour phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising silica and/or alumina impregnated with HC1, HBr, HI or an alkali-metal salt of one of the said acids. The process is preferably carried out in the presence of oxygen. The catalyst may also comprise other metal oxides or metal salts. The acrolein may be in the form of a reaction product containing acrolein, e.g. that obtained by the oxidation of propene. Examples are given for the production of pyridine and 3-methylpyridine.
