Abstract

1,158,116. Pens for recording instruments. XEROX CORP. 27 Sept., 1966 [4 Oct., 1965], No. 43088/66. Heading B6P. [Also in Division H4] A facsimile receiver comprises a platen for supporting a length of web recording material in an arcuate configuration, at least two feed roll assemblies for advancing the web at a uniform rate over the platen, a marking device carried on a rotatable support and effective to traverse the web material to mark it in response to facsimile signals, and a web cutter which traverses the web material when actuated in response to a control signal. In the embodiment illustrated in (Fig. 8) paper strip (25) is drawn from a supply spool by pairs of guide rollers (detailed in Fig. 5), and is shaped to partcylindrical form to overlie platen (61). A rotary turret (110) carries one or more ink pens (109) which continuously sweep across the width of the paper strip and are caused to mark it by electrostatic deposition of the ink in response to facsimile signals applied to the pen(s) from source (128). Turret (110) also carries cutting wheels (149) which are moved into engagement with the paper by a solenoid and cam system (140 detailed in Figs. 6 and 9), in response to a received "copy finished" signal to separate the completed facsimile from the paper supply. Pen details Fig. 10.-Ink from a reservoir 120 passes through a capillary tube 125 and is retained by surface tension between two wires 134 with their free ends sprung against each other. Only in the presence of an electrical potential on the wires does the ink meniscus reach the apex formed by the two wires and hence cause marking of the paper. Ink flow through tube 125 due to centrifugal forces is restricted by a central wire.
