Abstract

1,157,844. Injection moulds. CELANESE CORP. 25 Jan., 1967 [1 Feb., 1966], No. 3664/67. Heading B5A. In apparatus for injection moulding crystalline plastics in the molten state, a jet of the material issuing from a gate 18 into a mould cavity 14 impinges on an upstanding retractable projection 20 which breaks up the jet and prevents premature solidification of portions of the material. The gate has a width of at least 0À1 inch. When the mould cavity 14 is full, projection 20 retracts under pressure of the injected material against the action of a spring 24 in a chamber 21. Alternatively, the spring 24 may be strong enough to maintain the projection partly within the mould cavity when this is full so as to leave an impression in the moulding. The depth of the impression is a measure of the pressure of the molten plastics material. In an example, to produce a “ inch thick standard ASTM-type I tensile bar, projection 20 had a diameter of 0À25 inch and was directly in front of the gate 18, the distance between the edge thereof and the projection being 0À062 inch and that between the top of the projection and a cover (not shown) for the cavity being 0À09 inch. The injected material may be an oxymethylene copolymer, acetal copolymers and homopolymers.
