1,157,446. Reductive dimerization of unsaturated esters and nitriles. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES. 11 Oct., 1966 [1 Nov., 1965], No. 46130/65. Heading C2C. α,#-Olefinically unsaturated esters or nitriles are reductively dimerized by means of an alkali-metal amalgam reduction system characterized in that the ester or nitrile is contained in a reaction medium comprising an agent, e.g. water, methanol or ethanol, that cooperates with the amalgam to provide said amalgam reduction system, and a hexa-alkyl phosphoramide solvent which is liquid at ordinary temperature. The reaction is preferably effected at an apparent pH of 6-11 (maintained by the addition of a buffer) and a polymerization inhibitor may be present. The phosphoramide solvent suitably forms a major proportion by weight of the reaction mixture and other polar aprotic solvents, e.g. acetonitrile, may be present. In examples, acrylonitrile is dimerized to adiponitrile employing a hexamethyl phosphoramide solvent; some propionitrile is also produced.
