Abstract

1,054,473. Quaternary ammonium peroxy- SUlphates. FMC CORPORATION. May 5, 1965 [May 8, 1964], No. 18884/65. Heading C2C. [Also in Division D1] The invention comprises quaternary ammonium peroxymono sulphates where R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are saturated aliphatic, saturated cycloaliphatic or aromatic groups of up to 18 carbon atoms. These, and the corresponding peroxydisulphates are prepared by reacting a suitable quaternary ammonium salt with an inorganic peroxymonosulphate or peroxydisulphate; or the peroxymono sulphates can be prepared by reacting a quaternary ammonium hydroxide with a solution of H 2 SO 5 .Water is the preferred reaction medium. The aliphatic or cycloaliphatic groups may contain carboxyl, alkoxy, ester, amido or nitro substituents; unacceptable substituents are those oxidized by peroxysulphates, eg. amino, hydroxyl, cyano, keto, halogen (except fluorine) and aldehyde. Aromatic groups may be substituted by halogen, carboxyl, alkoxy, ester, amide or nitro groups, or aliphatic groups as above; unacceptable are amino, hydroxyl, keto and aldehyde. The quaternary ammonium peroxysulphates are bleaching agents (see Division D1).
