Abstract
1,157,351. Washing-machines. ROBERTSHAW CONTROLS CO. 17 Aug., 1966 [9 Sept., 1965], No. 36886/66. Heading D1A. A washing machine comprises an expandable pulley which is controlled from a pneumatic diaphragm which diaphragm is controlled by a second diaphragm operated through a programme control device. As shown in Fig. 6 a flexible tube 121 is connected to a source of low pressure and when operated draws the diaphragm 140 upwardly against the action of spring 173. The chamber 141 is connected to a second chamber 143 via a channel 176 a chamber 177 and a tube 178. As the chamber 141 is exhausted the chamber 143 is also exhausted and the second diaphragm 142 rises till the end 179 of the tube 178 is sealed thereby thus causing the cessation of depressurisation. The movement ofdiaphragm 142 causes the lever 134 to move and pushes the sheaf 130 of pulley 128 closer to -the sheaf 129 acid thus increase the drive ratio of the electric motor 11. Ports e.g. 189 are provided in the speed controller 120 to increase the pressure therein if it falls below the desired value. The ports 189 may be opened in a modification (not shown) by the vibration of an external weight which vibrates due to a state of imbalance in the machine at high speeds of rotation. The pressure in the lane 121 is controlled by a regulator (not shown) which comprises a diaphragm mounted in a closed container between two opposed springs. The state of balance of the springs controls the pressure and one spring is manually adjustable. A programme control device is positioned in the air line between the regulator and speed controller and this takes the form of a sheet with blisters therein which blisters can cover two parts in a reading head and thus produce an air passage. A similar pneumatic control is provided for water temperature selection and liquid level controls. Switches control a pump and ensure that the agitator cannot be started before the water container is full. The electric motor drive operates one way for agitation and the opposite way for spin drying separate pressure regulators being provided for each process each however controlling the same speed controller 120.
