Abstract

1,157,228. Selective signalling. ING. C. OLIVETTI & C. S.p.A. 25 Sept., 1967 [26 Sept., 1966], No. 43473/67. Heading G4H. [Also in Divisions C4 and H3] An oscillator 15 is connected via a phase shift network 12 and line selectors 80, 100 controlled by an information source 26 to a crossed array of electrodes 8, 10 forming part of an electroluminescent display screen (see Division C4). At each intersection there is a field effect transistor which controls the potential across an e.1. element forming part of the screen. The oscillator produces standing waves on electrodes selected by source 26 having antinodes at the intersections. The waves on electrodes 8, 10 are 180 degrees out of phase such that the polarity of antinodes on electrodes 10 results in a field preventing conduction across the f.e.t. whilst the polarity on electrodes 8 allows conduction, thus activating all the electrodes 10 except 10b and electrode 8a produces a field permitting conduction at intersection 8a, 10b whilst at all other intersections there is a null or blocking value. Each f.e.t. comprises a p-type Si base with two n-type zones on which are disposed metallic electrodes.
