Abstract
1,157,043. Liquid butyl rubber. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 5 May, 1967 [17 May, 1966], No. 21047/67. Heading C3P. A copolymer of a minor proportion of a C 4 -C 6 conjugated diolefin and a major proportion of an isoolefin of formula: CH 3 -CR = CH 2 wherein R is a C 1 -C 12 alkyl or cycloalkyl radical, which has a viscosity of from 10,000- 600.000 centipoises at 200‹F. and aratio ofweight average molecular weight to number average molecular weight as determined by gel permeation chromatography of less than 2À5, is prepared by contacting the monomers with a catalyst comprising ethyl aluminium dichloride promoted with hydrogen chloride or a C 3 -C 7 organic halide, or unpromoted aluminium bromide. The reaction preferably occurs in a continuous manner in solution at low tempertures. The products may be chlorinated or brominated and mixed with fillers and cured.
