In determining the quality of finish of a surface a photo-cell is alternately progressively exposed to and progressively cut off from light reflected off the surface, the photo-cell output wave form thereby indicating whether the light received was a sharply defined beam specularly reflected off a good surface or an ill-defined beam diffusely reflected off a poor surface. The alternate exposure and cut-off of light may be provided by a continuously rotating toothed disc or a slit which repeatedly opens and closes. An indication of the surface finish is given by the maximum amplitude of the second differential of photo-cell output, that is the rate of increase or decrease in light received, or alternatively by a comparison of the maximum amplitudes of the output and its finish differential, that is a measure of the specularly reflected light as a proportion of the total light.
