Abstract
1,156,823. Degassing molten metal. UNITED STATES STEEL CORP. May 18, 1966 [June 2, 1965], No.22142/66. Heading C7D. In a method and apparatus for degassing a continuous stream of molten metal the latter passes through successive stages of increased vacuum, being conducted through a first tube terminating within a second tube leading from one stage to the subsequent one so that there is defined for the metal a flow path of increasing cross-sectional area, the metal stream leaving the first-mentioned tube expanding to form a barrier between the two stages and thereby maintaining the vacuum differential between them. As particularly described and illustrated, Fig. 1, degassing vessel 10 is fed alternately by ladles 14a, 14b through inlet sections 11a, 11b, respectively, and discharges through openings 15a, 15b into a suitable container such as a continuous casting mould. Each inlet section may be closed by a valve 34 while the ladle is changed. Metal discharged from the ladle 14a passes through tube 40, on leaving which it is dispersed by the action of vacuum produced through lines 17a and 18 to fill the cross-section of tube 32, the stream" further expanding as it passes downwards to fill sleeve 33 and provide a vaccum barrier between the final and preceding stages. The metal then coalesces in the well of vessel 10, from where it is tapped after a barometric height has accumulated, discharge being controlled by the spring-loaded plate valve shown in Fig. 5.
