Abstract
1,156,140. Cutting webs. WIGGINS TEAPE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd. 9 Jan., 1968 [15 Feb., 1967], No. 7310/67. Heading B4B. Apparatus for removing a lozenge-shaped sample from an unsupported lengthwise moving web comprises a cutter device including at least one pair of cutting elements carried by support means for pivotal movement towards and away from the web, and actuating means co-operating with the cutter device and operable to effect pivotal movement of the cutting elements into and out of engagement with the web at a predetermined distance from an edge of the web and movement in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the web such that a lozenge-shaped sample is cut in the web, by the cutting elements wherein the actuating means comprises elements operatively connected with said support means first to effect entry of the cutting elements into the web, at a controlled rate and following insertion of the cutting elements through the web to effect said traverse of the cutting elements. In one form, a cutter device has two cutting elements 2, Figs. 1 and 2, mounted on arms 10 supported for oscillating movement about a pivot 12, carried by extensions 13 on a bracket 14, towards and away from web 1, the arms 10 being oscillated about the pivot 12 by means of a rotatable driving shaft 15 carried by the extensions 13 and eccentric members 16 which are rotatable in slots 17 formed in the arms 10. The shaft 15 is rotatable by a handle, and rotatable with the shaft are cam elements 18 which co-operate with followers 19 to effect lateral movement of the arms 10 against the bias of spring plates 11 following piercing of the web by the tips 3 of the cutting elements 2. The device is arranged to cut a sample 28, Fig 10, from the web, the axis 8 of the sample in this case being parallel to the longitudinal edges 9 of the web. The sample is removed from the web by the end 21 of a spring-pressed camoperated diverter 20 oscillatable about the pivot 12. If the web is of low tensile strength, two further followers 29 are provided and are so adjusted as to contact the cam elements 18 to cause the tips 3 to part just before the tips pierce the web. In a modification, two cutter devices are each mounted on a bracket (14), Fig. 4 (not shown), slidable lengthwise of a fixed bar (31) extending transversely of the path of the web, the brackets being retained in spaced relation along the bar by connecting links (32), Fig. 5 (not shown) and the driving shafts of the cutter devices are coupled for simultaneous rotation by link shafts (33). In another modification, a traversable cutter device comprises a rotatable primary shaft 37, Figs. 6 and 7, having rotatable therewith a gear wheel 39 meshing with a pinion 40 carried by the driving shaft 15 to effect rotation thereof, a stationary cam 41 and a disc 44 rotatable with the shaft 37 and provided with retractable pins 45 engaging the cam 41 during movement of the cutter device from the starting position a by traversing means thereby to effect rotation of the shaft 37 and one revolution of the shaft 15. The traversing means comprises, for example, a nut 48 carried by the cutter device and threaded on a rotatable lead screw 49. The cam includes a ramp (56), Fig. 8 (not shown), operable to depress one of of the pins (45) during the return movement of the cutter device. The cutter device is pivotally mounted, at 53, on a bracket 51 slidable along a fixed bar 52.
