Abstract

1,155,876. Axial-flow compressors, blowers and pumps. JOY MFG. CO, Oct.18, 1966, No.46484/66. Heading F1C. In an encased axial-flow compressor, blower or pump, having a rotor comprising a hub and a number of blades extending radially outwardly from the hub, each blade has a radially inner portion forming an impulse section and a radially outer portion at least the radially outer expanse of which forms a reaction section. The minimum radial length of the impulse section and, preferably, of the reaction section is 10% of the total blade length or of the rotor hub radius, whichever is the smaller. The radial length of the impulse section is not normally greater than <SP>1</SP>/ 3 of the rotor hub radius. The trailing end of the impulse section extends in the direction of rotation at an angle of at least 15 degrees with a plane through the rotational axis. The rotor hub may diverge in the direction of flow. The rotor blades may be of adjustable pitch and be non- uniformly spaced around the rotor hub. Stator blades may be arranged upstream and/or downstream of the rotor. Contra-rotating rotors may be used.
