1,155,757. Cathode-ray display tubes. GENERAL ELECTRODYNAMICS CORP. 16 Sept., 1966 [27 Sept., 1965], No. 41577/66. Heading H1D. A display device for displaying alpha-numeric characters for example, comprises aluminescent screen, a barrier in the electron beam path comprising a plurality of separate, perforated superposed conducting layers 18 which may be on circular or rectangular glass sheets 20 or on anodized Al foil for example of 0À00127 cm. to 0À00762 cm. thickness, each conducting layer being in the form of the desired symbol and an electrically separate background layer. Each symbol may be connected, via conducting extension 24, to the single conductor 30 at a potential positive with respect to the electron beam, while switching mechanism 34 enables the background of the desired symbol to be at a negative potential and the remaining backgrounds to be at a positive potential with respect to the beam potential. The conductive coatings may extend into the underlying perforations and the thickness of the insulating discs is preferably such that the barrier thickness is of the order of the perforation diameter.
