A quick-release fastening comprises a body 10 adapted to have a first belt 19 attached thereto, an abutment portion 13 on the body, a catch member 20 having a first abutment portion 21 engaged with the abutment portion 13 on the body and a second abutment portion 22 disposed between the abutment portion on the body and one end of the body, a tongue member 24 adapted for connection to a second belt end 32 and insertable at one end between the body and the catch member 20 to a position in which an abutment portion 25 on the tongue member 24 engages the second abutment portion 22 on the catch member to prevent withdrawal of the tongue member, the arrangement of the abutment portions being such that the lines of action of the force applied to the second abutment portion 22 by the tongue member 24 when it is attempted to withdraw the tongue member and of the force applied by the first abutment portion 21 to the abutment portion 13 of the body, are substantially co-planar, and means for displacing the catch member relative to the body 10 to move the second abutment portion 22 in a direction substantially perpendicular to the lines of action to disengage the abutment portion 25 and the tongue member from the second abutment portion 22 on the catch member so as to permit withdrawal of the tongue member. As shown, a spring 26 retains the catch member in its operative position and to prevent complete disengagement of the abutment portions 13, 21. A lever member 29 rests on flanges 11 of the body 10 and includes a portion 31 which overlies the tongue member 24 when this is in position and which is also formed with grooves 32 in which wing portions 33 of the catch member are captive. The arrangement is such that with the tongue member engaged and retained in the body member 10 by the catch member 20, a lifting force applied at the free end 29a of the lever member 29, lifts the catch member sufficiently to free the tongue member from the abutment 22. In another arrangement Figs. 4-7 (not shown), a modified spring and catch member are employed. In a further arrangement Figs. 8-10 (not shown) the lever member of Figs. 4-7 is replaced by a clip-on cover member which is apertured -to give access to an extension (134) of the catch member so that the extension may be depressed to disengage the second abutment (122) from the abutment on the tongue member. In another embodiment, Figs. 11-13 (not shown) in which the catch member is also operated by depression of an extension, the spring is formed of wire, the abutment portion on the body is constituted by tabs (241), the catch member first and second abutment portions are defined by lugs (242), (244), and the catch member is of arched in transverse cross-section. In all arrangements the tongue member is provided with a slidable bar for adjustable attachment of the second belt end.
