Abstract

1,155,413. Magnetic tape manufacture; magnets. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 July, 1966 [13 July, 1965], No. 29579/65. Headings H1H and H1P. An orientated magnetic tape is produced by passing a base tape with its fluid coating through hollow passages in the two polepieces of a horseshoe type magnetic assembly, the field in the gap between the polepieces being tangential to the coating, and the arrangement being such that the reverse field where the tape emerges is small enough for no disorientation to occur. The conventional assembly comprises polepieces (2, 3), air gap (4), permanent magnets (5, 6), and bridge member (7); and three modified arrangements are described: (a) at exit point 13 there is placed assembly 21 comprising two pairs of soft iron bars 22, 23, 24 and 25, connected to bar magnets 26 (Fig. 4); (b) as in Fig. 4, but an electric coil (17) replaces assembly 21 (Fig. 3); (c) magnet 5 is replaced by a soft iron bar (33), and gap 4 is displaced to the left (Fig. 5); magnet 6 may comprise a number of parallel magnets. The coating may be acicillar γ-Fe 2 O 3 dispersed in a resin or lacquer.
