Abstract
1,155,262. Zinc phosphide. ALBRIGHT & WILSON (MFG) Ltd. 7 July, 1966 [7 April, 1965], No. 14849/65. Heading C1A. Zinc phosphide or a mixture thereof with red phosphorus is prepared by heating zinc powder with molten white phosphorus and maintaining the temperature between the m.p. and b.p. of white phosphorus, for at least sufficient time to form the desired product, any unreacted white phosphorus being separated. The preferred temperature is between 200 and 250‹ C. and the time of heating is at least 6 hours. The residual white phosphorus may be separated by distillation e.g. at a temperature above 284‹ C. but preferably above the m.p. of zinc i.e. 450- 500‹ C. The heating at above 204‹ C. is preferably continued for at least 2 hours, whilst at the higher temperature the heating may be continued for 3-4 hours. Alternatively the residual white P may be extracted by a solvent e.g. CS 2 . The reaction mixture is preferably agitated vigorously during heating e.g. in a rotary reactor in the presence of an inert grinding material.
