Abstract
1,155,048. Feeding ammunition to guns. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 20 Sept., 1966 [30 Nov., 1965], No. 42023/66. Heading F3C. Means for transferring unlinked ammunition b, e from feeder means to a rapid fire gun, e.g. a Gatling type gun, comprises an entrance sprocket 2 and an exit sprocket 3. The ammunition travels around and under the entrance sprocket 2 and around and over the exit sprocket 3. Guides 18a, 18b, 18c are arranged adjacent the entrance sprocket, to guide ammunition into the teeth of the entrance sprocket wheel 4 and move the nose ends of the ammunition radially outwardly of the longitudinal axis of the entrance sprocket 2, the base of the ammunition during these nose movements being held in spaced recesses 22 in the entrance sprocket 2. When the ammunition has passed through half a revolution of the entrance sprocket it is then picked up by the teeth of two exit sprocket wheels 6, 8. Further guides 19a, 19b, 19c, 19d are provided adjacent the exit sprocket, the further guide 19d being extended to form a cam surface (Fig. 5, not shown). In travelling half a revolution around the exit sprocket 3 the base ends of the ammunition are moved by the further guide means radially outwardly from the longitudinal axis of the exit sprocket 3 such that the ammunition is then in a position to be engaged by a bolt 24 of the gun to urge the ammunition into the breech of a barrel. The sprockets 2, 3 are driven from a shaft 23 through bevel gears 12, 13, 14, 15, the sprockets being rotated in opposite directions.
