A load attached to a suction lifting head 21 is raised by a parallel linkage 1, 2, 3, 4, without changing its orientation, when a rod 5, pivoted to the rod 3, is raised. As the load rises a pinion 18 is rotated by a toothed segment 17 attached to the rod 3. This causes a sleeve 7 and tube 14 to be moved linearly upwards by a crank 19 attached to the pinion 18 and a rod 20 which raises rings 8, 9. The latter is fixed to the top of the sleeve 7 and connected to the ring 8 by a spring 12 and a shock absorber 11. The tube 14 and the suction head 21 are connected with a vacuum line 22. The tube 14 is rotatable by an hydraulic ram 13 and a rack 16. The path of the load may be changed by making the segment 17 or the crank 19 adjustable.
