Abstract

1,154,873. Mineral-mining machines; dust suppression in mines. T. G. CLARKE, O. A. TUSTIN and E. R. L. BOWDEN. 7 Nov., 1967 [7 Sept., 1966], No. 39988/66. Heading E1F. The cutting means of a mineral-mining machine primarily comprises three cutting discs arranged respectively at either end of a vertical shaft 5 and at the free end of a horizontal shaft 4, the shafts being rotatably mounted in a gear head 2 of the machine to extend respectively above and below the gear head and outwards of the face side of the gear head so the cutting discs mounted on the shafts have a juxta-position relationship permitting of two horizontal and one vertical cut to be made in a seam of mineral for detachment of largish blocks of mineral from the seam. The vertical shaft 5 is driven from the horizontal shaft 4, which has annular cutter sleeves 24 of relatively small external diameter mounted on that portion of itself which would extend forward of the face the seam in use of the machine to cut a clearance kerf for the shaft. Passages are provided in the shafts and the sleeves to permit of passage of water to the cut mineral for the suppression of dust therefrom.
