Abstract

[Also in Divisions H2 and H3] In an ignition generator, a magnet 32 with polepieces 24, 26 mounted on an aluminium flywheel 20 causes flux to pass through E-shaped core 34 on the stator to develop a voltage across coils 42, 44 Figs.2 and 3 (not shown). Further polepieces 28, 30 co-operate with a core 52 to generate a triggering voltage in coils 52, which is effective to maintain a gate turn off thyristor (86) conducting to keep the primary 42 short circuited. When the current in coil 50 reverses, thyristor (86) is cut off and a pulse occurs across windings 42, 44 to fire a sparking plug. In a modification, Fig.4 (not shown) the E-shaped core is mounted on the same side of the flywheel as core 50. In a further modification, Fig.6 (not shown) the magnets (150,160) are both mounted in the flywheel. Two triggering coils 50, (104) may be used with different inductance/resistance ratio to give an advance spark with increased rotor speed. The gate turn off thyristor may be turned off quickly by a negatively charged capacitor discharging through a thyristor (see Division H3).
