Abstract

1,154,571. Vacuum depositing silver. W.G. SCHARF. June 13, 1966 [Jan. 20, 1966], No.26326/66. Heading C7F. [Also in Division D1] A non-laminated, flexible, silverized and coated web is produced by vacuum depositing a silver layer on to a surface of a flexible thermoplastic base web 11, e.g. being transported from a supply roll 12 over evaporating silver in vessels 21 to a wind-up roll 13 within a vacuum chamber 10 at a pressure of 10<SP>-2</SP> to 10<SP>-8</SP> torr, coating the silver layer with a wet thermoplastic film, e.g. using a coating solution of an ethylene terephthalateethylene isophthalate copolyester in diethylene dioxide to which an amber dye may be added, levelling the wet film to produce a pore-free layer and drying. The base web may be polymerized ethylene glycol terephthalate transported at constant speed and at uniform tension by a magnetic clutch 24 coupled to the supply roll 12; at least one guide roll 17, 18 may be cooled e.g. by refrigerant 27. The coated web may be subsequently slit to produce a thread about which a supporting thread of silk or nylon having a different colour may be twisted.
