Abstract

1381200 Non-woven tape; spreading filamentary strands PHILCO-FORD CORP 8 Dec 1972 [8 Dec 1971] 56898/72 Headings D1F and D1R A tow of filamentary material is formed into a tape of parallel continuous filaments by spreading and partially aligning the individual filaments e.g. by passage of the tow through a slot venturi through which air flows in the same direction thereas, and then passing the spread tow through a (second) slot, venturi having coextensive spaced parallel plates disposed on opposite sides thereof and extending upstream and downstream, between which plates and through the slot air flows counter to the direction of tow movement. The filaments are thus fully aligned so as to form smooth tape free from gaps or angular overlay of filaments. In the operation of the machine represented wherein two or more tapes are formed simultaneously and then combined into a single sheet and stored, graphite filament bundles 10, 11, 12, 13 drawn by rollers 14 from supply spools 15 pass successively through a first slot venturi or preblower 18 to form spread tows 10a, 11a, 12a, 13a and a second 10b, 11b, 12b, 13b. Spreaders 18, 19, comprise or final slot venturi spreader 19 to form tapes several venturi devices in modular array, Fig. 2 (not shown) through which the tows may effect repeated passes. The output tapes 10b-13b are combined in side-by-side coplanar relation by passage through a device 20 to form a single sheet or tape T which passes over an idler roll 21 and is fed to a roller 22 submerged in a bath of impregnating material e.g. a plastics resin of the epoxy, phenolic or polyamide type. Tape T, subject to the tractive pull of rollers 16, 17 is joined to a carrier tape 24 e.g. of parchment paper, drawn from a storage reel 25. The final product is passed through a drying tube 26 through which warm air flows and wound on a reel 27 for storage and transport.
