Abstract
1,130,577. Laminates; reinforcing edges of non-metallic sheet material. CROMWELL PAPER CO. 19 Sept., 1966 [7 March, 1966], No. 41729/66. Headings B5K and B5N. [Also in Division D1] A machine for laying a reinforcing fabric of spaced filaments 33 diagonally upon a continuously moving continuous web of material 39 comprises an endless conveyer 45 which travels around a pair of laterally spaced sprockets 46, 47 and orbits filament carrying eyelets 50 in a plane substantially normal to the direction of web movement, and means for feeding a selvage strand 37 to the moving web along the axis of rotation of each of the sprockets. As shown a rotary creel 10 has a plurality of storage spools 14 of the filament or reinforcing material, e.g. spun glass, a distributing wheel 16, a weaving head 18 (including the conveyer 45), and a movable carriage 20 mounted on rails 21. The discs 12 and wheel 16 are mounted on a shaft 26 rotatable in timed relationship with the movement of the conveyer 45 of the head 18. The filaments run through the wheels 16 and eyelets 50 and are laid on the web 39, which may be on paper and have adhesive applied thereto by a roller 33. A second web of paper 38 is laminated to the web 39, with the filaments 33 between, by rollers 41, 42. The wheeling head 18 is supported on an extension 34 of a fixed shaft. A gear-box 35 is fixed to the extension 34 and mounts spools 36 which provide the selvage strands 37 for the fabric. After leaving the eyelets 50 the filaments 33 are led over guides 66, which may be bent rods as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, or be a segment of a right conical surface, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), or be a solid rounded bar, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown). The guides 66 are mounted on the head 18 at each end thereof and have a forwardly projecting element extending diagonally in the plane of the selvage strands and the nip of the rollers 41, 42 from adjacent the pitch circle of the eyelets 50, at the ends of the head 18, to at least the end of selvage strand delivering tubes 55. A constant sension is thus maintained on the filaments 33 during the turn around the selvage strands. By moving the carriage 20 relatively to the rollers 41, 42 different widths of reinforcement fabric may be made. Within limits, the longer the amount of unsupported selvage strand, the narrower the reinforcement fabric due to the pull on the unsupported selvage strands by the tensioned strands 33.
