Abstract

[Also in Division D1] A method of manufacturing drafting aprons comprises mounting an unwrinkled sleeve of an open mesh textile material on a smooth cylindrical mandrel, applying a layer of unvulcanized rubber over the sleeve, and, after applying reinforcement, e.g. a helically wound layer of cord, and then a further unvulcanized rubber layer, vulcanizing the rubber whilst supported by the mandrel, stripping the vulcanized rubber sleeve so formed and the textile sleeve together from the mandrel, and then stripping the textile sleeve from the rubber sleeve to leave on the internal surface thereof a grooved pattern of wholly curved lines. The textile sleeve may be a seamless loosely-knitted fabric of cotton, rayon nylon or poly-(ethylene terephthalate). The textile sleeve may be moistened with a release agent to assist removal from the vulcanized sleeve. The rubber sleeve may be externally ground before removal of the knitted sleeve and the composite article may be chemically treated to reduce its surface friction and sliced to the required width.
