1,154,555. Coating with metals. OFFICE NATIONAL D'ETUDES ET DE RECHERCHES AEROSPATIALES. July 29, 1966 [July 31, 1965], No. 34158/66. Heading C7F. In a halide diffusion process for coating a refractory material with a metal e.g. Ta, Nb or Hf, having an atomic weight greater than 90, a degree of electropositivity of at least 1, and a melting point greater than 1500‹C., the amount of metal deposited is controlled by including the metal in the form of a powdered alloy with another metal, e.g. Mo, Cr, Ni or Co, having an electropositivity the same as that of the refractory material. The reaction takes place in a reducing atmosphere, e.g. hydrogen at a temperature of 800 to 1250‹C. in a mixture comprising the powdered alloy, a refractory diluting substance, e.g. alumina, tantalum oxide or thorium oxide, and a halide, e.g. aluminium fluoride, ammonium chloride and bromide, and chromium halides. Parts which are not to be coated may first be coated with a paste of refractory powders. The coating may be subsequently coated with aluminium.
