Abstract
1,154,350. Electro-physical measurements determining fibre size. BELOIT CORP. Oct. 6, 1966 [Oct.22, 1965], No.44756/66. Heading G1N. [Also in Division G3] The invention relates to measuring the size of fibre particles in a paper-making process from the amplitude and duration of pulses derived by the "boulter" principle. The paper stock is continuously sampled and brought to a predetermined dilution and conductivity before passing through the measuring circuit. The system is illustrated by block-diagrams which are largely self-explanatory. Sample control Fig. 1 The sample flow is continuously monitored and controlled; the dilution-water-flow is monitored and controlled to a predetermined ratio with the sample; after heating to a controlled temperature, the conductivity is monitored to control the electrolyte added to the dilution-water to maintain a predetermined conductivity. Length of the fibre is determined from the duration of the pulse which is clipped to constant amplitude and integrated to produce a sawtooth with a maximum amplitude proportional to the pulse duration Fig. 2 (not shown). A resetable holding circuit for the sawtooth maximum amplitude is illustrated in Fig. 6 (not shown). Diameter of the fibres is determined from the pulse amplitude. Errors due to coincidence of two or more fibres is eliminated by holding the signal for a "threshold maximum fibre length" - any signal in excess of this inhibits gating of the holdcircuit, Fig. 3 (not shown). In addition held sample values could be compared with a predetermined maximum value and rejected if in excess of this. These circuits may be combined to provide fibre volume and consistency analyzing arrangements Figs.4, 5 (not shown).
