Abstract

1,129,536. Photo-electric measurement of paper web formation. VALMET OY. June 17, 1966 [Oct. 19, 1965], No.27069/66. Heading G1A. The "cloudiness" (sheet formation variations) of a travelling paper web is measured by detecting light transmitted through the web to produce a signal having D.C. and A. C. components, the ratio between which is indicative of the cloudiness of the sheet. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, light from a source 2 is transmitted by the web to the detector, a photo-multiplier 4. The D.C. component is measured by a milliammeter 5 and the A. C. component by an A. C. meter 7 across the fixed resistor 6. The quotient of the components in percentages is read on a meter 8. In a second arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown), the meter 5 of Fig. 1 is replaced by a device (9) which controls an aperture stop (3) located in front of the detector (4) the D. C. component being maintained constant thereby. In this case, the cloudiness of the sheet formation is measured direct from the meter(7), meter 8 being omitted. The ratio measured is U m /#U where U m denotes the root mean square of the instantaneous value of intensity transmitted by the web, above or below the average transparency of the paper U (the D. C. component). The sensitivity of the apparatus is adjustable to deal with different grades of paper. By frequency analysis of the detector output, floc size distribution of the paper may be investigated.
