A rotary-piston I.C. engine of the kind having a rotary piston in the form of a trochoid and a housing whose inner peripheral surface is the outer envelope curve of the trochoid includes radial sealing means between the trochoidal piston surface and the outer envelope curve and axial sealing means between the ends of the piston and the adjacent end-faces of the housing wherein the zone at the outer edge of the rotary piston the radial sealing means is in continuous contact with the axial sealing means. As shown, an epitrochoidal piston 2, Fig.1, is formed on each end-face adjacent the piston periphery with a groove slidably mounting a spring-loaded axial seal 4, Fig.2 and planetarily rotates within a housing whose outer envelope curve 1 is bi-arcuate, and formed at its nodal points G, H with axially extending slots slidably mounting spring-loaded radial sealing strips 3. Each axial seal 4 urged by springs 8 into sealing contact with an end-face 5 of the housing, sealingly abuts an end portion 3c of a radial sealing strip 3 to close a gap A between a piston end and housing end-face 5. The sealing strips 3 are semicylindrical in cross-section at their inner radial edges, with the end portions 3c wider and deeper than the main portion 3a. Intermediate portions 3b inter-connecting the end portions 3c to the main portion 3a may have a straight or curved sloping face 6' which co-operates with a corresponding sloping face on the piston. The axial seals 4 are in the form of split rings having overlapping portions to prevent leakage at the split and they include a portion projecting into a recess in the piston end to prevent turning in the grooves.
