Abstract

[Also in Divisions G3 and H2] A sewing machine is driven by a series motor M through a notched belt 9 bearing iron cleats 16 at regular intervals to form part of a tachometer generator 10, whose stator comprises soft iron parts 11, 12, a permanent magnet 13, and a winding 14. The amplitude and frequency of the voltage induced in the winding 14 is proportional to the speed of the machine. The motor M is supplied from A.C. lines a, b, through controlled rectifier D2 and diode D1, the rectifier being triggered when the voltage across capacitor C is sufficient to break down a Zener diode D3. The capacitor is shunted by transistor T having the tachometer generator 10 in its base control circuit. If the machine tends to over-speed, the transistor becomes more conductive to discharge the capacitor at a greater rate, so retarding the firing-point of the rectifier D2. This reduces the motor current and restores the speed to a set value. Similarly, the motor current is increased to allow for a drop in speed. In a modification, the cleats 16 are formed as permanent magnets constituted by synthetic resin containing a magnetic powder, the magnetic circuit located in proximity to the belt being constituted of soft iron. The control circuit for the motor may be adapted to respond to frequency variations of the tachometer voltage, the control circuit comprising a pulse counter.
