Abstract

1,153,816. Brazing. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. 20 July, 1967 [15 Sept., 1966], No. 33322/67. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H1] In bonding a dielectric body to a metal body a film of elemental chromium is vapour deposited on to at least a portion of the dielectric body, a coating of braze material is provided on at least a portion of the metal body, the coating and film are placed in contact and the assembly is heated in dry hydrogen to melt the braze material. The dielectric material may be alumina, beryllia, quartz, glass or sapphire, the braze material may be copper, copper-gold alloy or copper-silver alloy which is deposited by vapour deposition and the metal of the body may be molybdenum. In making an assembly comprising a slow wave structure and its support rods mounted in a barrel, longitudinally spaced portions of the circumferential surface of a support rod 10 of beryllia are vapour coated with elemental chromium strips 12 to a thickness of 0À0001 to 0À001 inch and the rod is then sintered by firing in dry hydrogen at 1325- 1350‹ C. An annular film of titanium carbide is then deposited by cathodic sputtering on the uncoated surface of the rod, the film introducing attenuation and having a tapered configuration. Carbon or graphite may be employed instead of titanium carbide. Chromium strips are then deposited on the attenuating film in diametrically opposed positions. A slow wave structure in the form of a helix 20 of molybdenum has its outer surface flattened and a film 22 of braze material, e.g. copper, is vapour deposited thereon. A number, e.g. three, support rods 10 prepared as above described are assembled about the helix 20 with the chromium strips 12 engaging the braze material 22 and the assembly is fired in dry hydrogen at 1090-1100‹ C. to melt the braze material and form brazed joints between the helix and rods 10. A film 24, Fig. 14, of nickel is vapour deposited over the outer chromium strips 12 and the exposed inner chromium strips are removed in hydrochloric acid. A film 26 of braze material, e.g. 28% copper-72% silver alloy is vapour deposited on the nickel films 24 and the assembly is inserted into a barrel 28 of niobium or of alternate lengths of molybdenum and copper and the resultant assembly is fired in dry hydrogen to melt the braze material 26 but not the braze material 22, e.g. at 840-850‹ C. The slow wave structure may be in ring bar or cloverleaf form.
