Abstract

[Also in Division C3] Amido-amines having more than two hydrogen atom-containing amine groups in the molecule, at least one nitrogen atom common to a polyalkylene polyamine and the amido group of a substituent aliphatic monocarboxylic acid amide containing 12 to 14 carbon atoms and at least one other nitrogen atom carrying a substituent group -CHR<SP>2</SP>.CH<SP>3</SP>CO.Z, where R<SP>2</SP> is hydrogen or methyl, R<SP>3</SP> is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, and Z is -NH 2 , -OH, -OCH 3 , or -OC 2 H 5 , are prepared by reacting a polyalkylene amine of formula H 2 N.R.(NHR) n .NH 2 with both an aliphatic C 12-14 monocarboxylic acid and an α-#-unsaturated carbonylic compound of formula R<SP>2</SP>CH=CR<SP>3</SP>.CO.Z, where R is a C 2-4 hydrocarbon radical and n is 0 to 4, the reactants being used in such quantities that the ratio of the sum of the moles of polyalkylene polyamine and said unsaturated carbonylic compound to moles of said aliphatic acid is from 7:1 1 to 3:1 1 and the molar ratio of polyalkylene polyamine to said unsaturated carbonylic compound is from 4: 3 to 2:1. The amido-amines are used as curing agents for epoxide resins.
