Abstract

1,153,380. Reciprocating pumps. S.J. PICKARD. July 31, 1967 [Aug.1, 1966], No.34999/67. Heading F1A. A pump assembly for mounting in a well bore has an inflatable annulus 12 which is inflated with gas released from a container 44 by a valve 41 actuated by a float 71 when the pump is immersed, the inflated annulus acting to support the pump assembly and to seal the well bore beneath the pump from that above, so that the well bore can be used to convey the liquid delivered by the pump. The annulus is deflated by opening an exhaust valve in assembly 41 by a rod 79 actuated by a well tool engaging a lever 88, or by a collar on the pump rod engaging a lever 80 on lifting of the pump rod above its normal upper limit. Annulus 12 may have an abrasive coating, 32 to improve its anchoring effect, or may have metal wedge members which engage the bore wall on inflation of the annulus, Figs. 11 to 13 (not shown) to prevent downward movement of the pump. The pump bucket 21 is spring-loaded downwardly, and moved upwardly by a cable 39. A filter 20, inlet valve 19 and bucket valve 22 are provided. The exhausted gas from annulus 12 is passed beneath the pump through pipes 30, 31.
