Abstract

1,153,333. Compressed-air braking systems. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO. Ltd. 3 Nov., 1966 [23 Aug., 1965], No. 36034/65. Heading F2F. In a compressed-air braking system for a vehicle of the kind comprising service and emergency lines 3, 4 fed by separate reservoirs 1, 2 and supplying separate chambers of a multi-diaphragm or equivalent brake motor 5 under control of a dual brake valve 7, which is biased to establish a specific pressure in the service line before rendering the emergency line operational to give a corresponding pressure in that line, there is provided a light/laden valve 6 responsive to vehicle load in the service line and, in order to avoid the possibility of emergency line pressure exceeding service line pressure under light loading conditions except when a failure of service line pressure occurs, a limiting valve 8 responsive to service line pressure is inserted in the emergency line. Preferably, the limiting valve comprises a differential piston (11, Fig. 2, not shown) which resiliently mounts a valve element (19) adapted to engage a valve seat (17) unless emergency line pressure, acting on the piston face of smaller area, exceeds service line pressure, acting on the piston face of larger area, by a suitable factor, e.g. 5: 3. The light/laden valve 6 may be constructed as disclosed in Specifications 1,077,541 and 1,108,185, while the dual brake valve 7 may be constructed as disclosed in Specification 1,153,332 in order to provide the biasing effect referred to above.
