Pharmaceutical compositions comprise as active ingredients (A) at least one sympathicomimetic drug and (B) at least one substance having #-adrenolytic action and falling within the formula:- where An is an aryl group and X is an isopropyl or a tertiary 'butyl group, whereby the therapeutic index of said sympathicomimetic drug is improved. The Ar radical is preferably phenyl, naphthyl, tetrahydronaphthyl or indanyl optionally substituted by at least one halogen atom, aliphatic hydrocarbon, alkoxy, nitro, acyl, carboxy, alkoxycarbonyl, hydroxyalkyl, amino, alkylamino, aminoalkyl, cyano, aralkoxy, hydroxy or methylenedioxy group and the substances may be present as esters or ethers formed at the hydroxy group of the propylene chain e.g. ethoxyethyl or tetrahydropyranyl ethers. Specified substances having #-adrenolytic action include 1-(m-tolyloxy)-3-, 1-(1-naphthyloxy)-3-, and 1-#'-chloro-5'-cyanophenoxy)-3-isopropylaminopropanol-2, 1-(3', 5'-dimethylphenoxy) -3- isopropylaminopropanol-2 and its ethoxyethyl ether, 1-(m-tolyloxy)- 3- and 1-(3', 5'-dimethylphenoxy) -3-isopropylamino propyl-2-tetrahydropyranyl-2 ether and 1 -(2', 3'-dimethylphenoxy)-3-t-butylaminopropanol-2. The sympathicomimetic drug may have the general formula:- wherein Ar is an aryl group, e.g. phenyl optionally substituted by at least one halogen atom or hydroxy group, Alk is an alkyl group which may be substituted with an aryl group especially an unsubstituted aryl group or a chloro-or hydroxyl-aryl group, R<SP>1</SP> is OR wherein R is H or Alk and R taken together represent an alkylene chain joining the O and N atoms e.g. as in a morpholine ring, and R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> which may, be the same or different represent hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups e.g. 1-(m-hydroxy phenyl)-2-ethylamino ethanol, 1-(3', 5'-dihydroxyphenyl) 2-[#-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-isopropylamino] ethanol-1, 1-(3', 5'-di hydroxy phenyl)-2-isopropylaminoethanol-1, 2- phenyl-3-methylmorpholine, adrenaline, adrianol (1 -(w-hydroxyphenyl)-2-methylaminoethanol-1), methamphetamin (1-phenyl-2-methylaminopropane) and mephentermin (N, α, α-trimethylphenylethylamine). The active ingredients (A) and/or (B) may be present in the form of non-toxic acid addition salts e.g. the hydrochloride hydrobromide, sulphate, phosphate, methanesulphonate, acetate, lactate, tartnate or ascorbate. The compositions may be in forms suitable for oral, rectal or parenteral administration e.g. capsules, tablets, coated tablets, suspensions, ampoules and suppositories containing conventional excipients.
