The suction nozzle, of a street refuse collecting vehicle, having four downwardly extending walls 12, 14, 16 providing ground spaced suction opening 18 has a number of external jets 34 directing pressure fluid towards the suction opening to dislodge refuse. The jets, which may be of water or air, may be carried on a pipe fixed either to the nozzle or to the vehicle chassis and preferably are directed forwards and downwards.
